June 24th: Medicinal and Edible Plants and Vegetables

Join the girl guides of Uncharted Outdoorswomen for a private Women of Colorado event guided by Madi and Melissa!  Madi is a vegetarian who has studied the forest through her therapy practice.  She describes herself as a naturalist and forest walker.  Melissa grew up foraging with her family all over Colorado.  She usually travels backcountry roads via her offroad vehicle, which she fixes herself!  Below is a list of gear to bring and plants we plan to identify.  Their objective is to introduce you to how to find and identify medicinal and edible plants and vegetbales. 

This is a rain or shine event, but no lightning!  Be prepared for Colorado weather even if the forecast doesn't predict it! The weather re-schedule date will be July 22nd, PLEASE be sure to reserve both dates as you will not be eligible to be refunded due to incliment weather.  Our hike will be an easy one near Nederland, Colorado.  We plan to meet in a public parking lot and carpool to the trailhead.  We plan to walk a maximum of 4 miles round trip with little elevation gain.  There will be moose.

What to bring:

- layers, including a rain jacket

- hat and sunglasses

- waterproof boots

- a sharp knife

- foraging basket or mesh bag (not plastic)

- field note journal

- water, snacks, medication

We will learn about plants that can be used as non-traditional medicine; blood clotting while in the field, insect / bee stings, pain management, treating skin rashes or allergies, treating an upset stomach and other digestive, respiratory and urinary tract ailments.

We plan to see and identify the following:

- Arnica

- Wild Mountain Rose

- Osha

- Mullein

- Yarrow

- Gum Weed

- Red Clover

- Fireweed

- Cow Parsnip

- Columbine

- Sweet Yellow Clover

- Wild Parsley

- Scent Bottle

Please note all guests will be required to sign a waiver of liability form AS WELL as getting a permit to harvest forest products from the USFS. Those permits are available online in mid May of 2023. 

Refund policy: There will be no refunds made on or before June 10th, 2023. If you cancel and request a refund before then, your refund will be subject to a 10% administrative charge. There are NO refunds due to weather. The weather re-schedule date will be July 22nd, PLEASE be sure to reserve both dates as free just in case, as you will not be eligible to be refunded due to incliment weather for the June 24th date. If both dates get cancelled due to weather, refunds will be administered minus our standard 10% fees.
